Unpopular take: playing the same course every week is stalling you

I've been a member at the same muni for four years. Play about 45 rounds a year there, know every tree, every bail out, every green that breaks away from the ridge even though it looks dead flat from the fairway. My index sits around 9 and honestly half of that number is course knowledge, not golf.

Went on a trip last month, three tracks I'd never seen. Shot 94, 91, 89. Same swing, same putter, same guy. The difference was I had to actually read greens, pick a target, and commit instead of running my usual autopilot script. Humbling, but it was the most fun I've had on a course in two years.

Which is why I side-eye the standard advice of "just groove your game at your home course." You're not grooving golf, you're grooving that course. Aggressive lines off the tee that only work because you know the ball kicks left off that mound. Approach numbers you've hit 200 times. That's memorization wearing a golf shirt.

Not saying everyone should join a traveling league, green fees add up and I get that a membership is the cheap route for a lot of us. But if your handicap has been frozen for two seasons and you play the same track every weekend, maybe that's the thing. Not your swing, not your shafts.

Anyone else come back from a golf trip and realize how much of your game was just the course? Or did you get smoked and immediately book lessons lol.
