I used to be all about the gimme. Inside 3 feet? Pick it up, we're not on tour. But this season I started putting everything out in casual rounds and my short putting has improved more than any drill I've tried.
Here's the thing: when you never hit those 2-3 footers under pressure, you never learn to handle the yips. I missed a 3-footer in my club championship that would've won the match. Why? Because I hadn't hit a meaningful 3-footer in months. My buddies always gave them to me.
Now I putt everything out, even in friendly games. Yeah, it adds a few minutes per round, but I've dropped my 3-putt percentage from like 12% to 6% according to my app. And my confidence on the course is way up.
I get that gimmes speed up play, but are we really saving that much time? And at what cost to our games? Curious where everyone else stands. Do you take gimmes? What's your limit? Or am I just overthinking a casual round?
