DVR'd the final round Sunday and fast forwarded through the breaks like always, and it got me thinking about that "Playing Through" thing CBS does. The split screen where they keep the golf in a tiny box while an ad eats two thirds of the screen and all the audio.
I genuinely can't decide which is worse. A clean 3 minute break I can just skip. But the split screen keeps me locked in because I might miss a shot, so I sit there half-watching a truck commercial in a postage stamp window while some guy lines up a 6 footer. Worst of both worlds. Either show me golf or don't.
Anyway, I've basically stopped watching the main broadcast entirely. ESPN+ featured groups Thursday/Friday is the only golf I watch live anymore. No Nantz telling me about the azaleas in the middle of July, no 4 minute stretch of nothing but putter close-ups from 14 different angles.
Which brings me to the actual question. Is it just me or has the ad load gotten noticeably worse the last two seasons? I timed it once during a Saturday round out of pure spite. Roughly 22 minutes of actual golf in a 60 minute window. That can't be right, but it also felt right, if that makes sense.
And the obsession with showing every single Scheffler putt from six angles while some dude in the third to last group is quietly making a move we never see. That part drives me up a wall.
So what's your setup on a Sunday? Main broadcast, featured groups, or just the YouTube highlights at 9pm and pretend you watched it live?
