Man, I'm sick of seeing all the drill threads. Every other week it's some new thing about hip rotation or shoulder tuck, and then everyone comes back saying they tried it and they're just making it worse.
Look, drills are fine. They teach you where things should go. But I feel like the golf community gets obsessed with the mechanics until they forget what golf is supposed to feel like. It’s supposed to be a rhythm thing, right? A flow.
I remember back when I started, I was trying to force every single tiny part of the swing to look exactly like the videos. Like, 'My wrist angle must be precisely 1.5 degrees at the top.' And the result? It felt like I was trying to operate a robot. My shots were stiff, weird, and had zero confidence.
And that's where the tempo comes in, IMO. If your tempo is solid, your body often just figures out the right path without you having to micro-manage it. It's less about 'how hard I pull this putter face' and more about 'when does this feel right?'
I've seen some guys with terrible swing mechanics, seriously messy, but they have a killer tempo, and they just blow up the ball because they are too wound up trying to 'fix' the things that don't matter.
So, I'm curious what you all think. Do you think it's possible to have a great tempo with a slightly imperfect mechanical swing, or is there a minimum level of solid mechanics you need just to get the ball in the right place?
