Bought an Arccos set two seasons ago. Sensors came "free" with the grips, cool, whatever. Then the sub kicked in and now it's $155 a year to keep using hardware I already paid for. Miss a payment and my clubs are just... clubs again.
And it's spreading. Launch monitors want a yearly fee for the good software. Sim software wants a yearly fee. Rapsodo gates half the useful data behind premium. Meanwhile Shot Scope and Garmin just don't do it. You buy the thing, you use the thing.
Devil's advocate for a second though, and I'll eat the downvotes: maybe the sub model is fine and I'm just cheap. Servers cost money. Course maps don't update themselves. Firmware doesn't maintain itself. A one time $500 hardware sale doesn't fund ten years of support, and I've watched companies fold because they tried to. So which is it, are we getting fleeced, or did we all just get spoiled by buying a box and expecting forever?
I'm legit stuck on this. My Arccos renewal is in March and I keep telling myself I'll grab a V5 and never pay a sub again, but I know I'll miss the shot tracking within a month. Anyone made that jump and regretted it? Or the opposite, decided the fees are actually worth it and stopped complaining?
