I was looking at the 3M Open field and it's basically a Korn Ferry event. No Scottie, no Rory, no Xander. Just a bunch of guys trying to keep their cards. And I get it, the signature events have the big money and the big points. But it feels like the regular events are just an afterthought now. The Tour is basically saying "hey, if you're not in the top 50, we don't care about you." That can't be good for the game long term.
The purse difference is insane. The 3M Open has a $8.1 million purse, while the signature events are $20 million. The winner of the 3M gets less than a guy who misses the cut in a signature event? No, that's not true, but it's close. Actually, the winner gets $1.458 million, and last place in a signature event gets like $150k. So it's not that extreme, but still. The point is, the regular events are becoming irrelevant. And that's a problem because those events have history. The John Deere, the 3M, the Wyndham. They used to matter. Now they're just qualifiers for the playoffs.
I don't know, maybe I'm just old and yelling at clouds. But I think the Tour needs to find a way to make the regular events more meaningful. Maybe more FedEx Cup points, or a spot in the signature events for the winner. Something. Or maybe they don't care. What do you all think?
