Scotland golf trip in September - is the Old Course ballot a pipe dream?

So three of us are finally doing it. Scotland, first week of September. Flights are booked (into Edinburgh) and that's literally all we've done and I'm already overwhelmed lol.

The Old Course ballot thing is melting my brain. Do we actually have a shot as a threesome or do I need to sell a kidney for one of those guaranteed packages? Read somewhere you can only enter two days ahead and it's basically a lottery.

Also do we base in St Andrews the whole time or split it? Everyone keeps saying play the Castle course, the New course, etc. but I don't know how many rounds we can realistically cram into 5 days before someone's back gives out.

Anyone done this trip? I keep reading the Pinehurst 2 thread on here and getting nervous that hyped courses just wreck you if you're not ready for them

Am I overthinking the difficulty or is that fear legit?
