So my regular group is kicking around a golf trip in an RV this fall. The pitch is obvious: split gas, no hotel bills, roll up to the course parking lot, crack a beer, save a fortune. But I've been the voice of dissent on this one. I've done the math and between rental, insurance, campground fees (because you can't just park anywhere overnight), and the fact that you're driving a 30-foot brick, the savings evaporate. Plus someone has to be the designated driver every single day. That's a buzzkill.
Has anyone actually pulled this off? I'm talking a real golf trip, not a weekend at a state park. We're looking at a 5-day loop from Chicago up to northern Michigan. Courses like Arcadia Bluffs and Forest Dunes are on the list. But I keep picturing four dudes cramped in a tin can, arguing about whose turn it is to dump the tanks. Maybe I'm being dramatic.
The counterargument from my buddy is that it's about the adventure, not the money. And he's not wrong. There's something cool about a road trip where you're totally self-contained. But I've also heard horror stories about RV rentals having hidden fees and breakdowns in the middle of nowhere. Not exactly the vibe you want before a tee time.
So what's the verdict? Anyone done an RV golf trip and loved it? Or is this one of those ideas that sounds way better after a few beers?
