Bit the bullet last weekend and did all 13 clubs myself instead of paying the shop. Cost me about $65 in grips, tape and solvent versus the $180+ the local shop quoted me with install. Took me roughly 90 minutes being slow and careful. If you've been putting it off because it looks fiddly, it really isn't. A hook blade, a bucket, and a little patience is all you need.
Couple things I picked up along the way.
First, don't get cheap with the solvent. My first grip I tried to use too little and it grabbed about halfway on. Had to cut it off and start over. Drown the tape, seriously. You want it sloppy.
Second, I went from standard to midsize on everything, and it changed the swingweight feel way more than I expected. Not the actual number, but how heavy the club feels in the hands. My irons used to feel light and whippy, now they feel planted. I've got big mitts so this was probably overdue. Anyone else make that jump and notice the same thing?
Third, and this is the one that got me, check your grip sizes are consistent before you start. I grabbed one standard by mistake and it sat in the bag for two rounds before I noticed I kept pulling that club left. Cost me a lot of swearing on a par 3.
As for the actual grips, I went with Golf Pride CP2 Wrap in midsize on the irons and wedges, and a Tour Velvet on the driver because I wanted a bit more feedback. The CP2s are soft but not squishy. My hands don't ache after 18 anymore, which at 47 is worth more than the $65 if I'm honest.
What are you all running? I keep seeing people swear by the full cord stuff but I can't imagine wanting less feel in my hands. Maybe I'm just getting soft.
