So I've been at the range every week since March, hitting 7 iron off the mats like a machine. Pure after pure. Feeling like I finally cracked something.
Then I play my home course outside Carmel on Saturday. First par 3, chunk it. Second shot, chunk it. Third one I thin it across the green. Same swing, same grip, same everything as the range. Took me way too long to put it together: the mat bounces the clubhead into the ball. Fat shots feel and sound pure because the sole just skids off the rubber and the ball goes anyway. Real turf? The club digs, and you get punished like nature intended.
I asked the range guy if they'd ever put in a grass tee. He laughed. Fair enough I guess.
So what do you all do about this? I've tried teeing it up a hair, playing it back in my stance, putting a broken tee under the ball. None of it feels like actual dirt. There's a course 40 min away with a grass range but it's $18 a bucket and I refuse to believe that's the only answer here.
Anyway, hi, I'm Bob. Front nine is a warmup, back nine is where I live. Turns out the range is just a liar that takes my money.
