Played Broadmoor yesterday with a guy from my league. Nice dude, sells insurance, has the whole matching towel-and-headcover setup going on. Wind was out of the south at like 20, gusting higher.

Par 4 6th plays 385. He pulls driver, hits a low screamer that never gets more than 30 feet off the ground, ends up in the creek at 290. Drops, hits 6 iron in, three putts. Triple. Then on 12, same deal, driver into the wind, snap hook into the trees. He does this basically all day.

We get to the bar after and he tells me he's done with this driver, ordering a low spin head with a stiff shaft because his spin numbers are too high. Bro. Your spin numbers aren't the problem. You hit driver on 13 of 14 holes in a two club wind and never once considered a 4 iron to the 150 marker.

I'm not saying never hit driver. I'm saying a shot you can't control is worse than a shot that goes 40 yards shorter. Biggest drop in my handicap came the year I quit chasing the hero shot, went from a 14 to a 9 doing basically nothing else. No new clubs, no lessons, just taking the club that keeps me in the fairway.

Anyway, rant over. Genuinely curious though, how many of you actually change club selection based on wind, or do you just grip down and swing harder like this guy?
