Played Lawsonia Links last Thursday with two buddies on the way up to Green Lake. $95 to walk, twilight-ish rate, and honestly I'd have paid double. I knew about the history (Langford and Moreau, 1930, all those template holes) but reading about it does nothing. You have to stand on some of these greens.
The 7th. The boxcar green. I hit what I thought was a decent 8 iron, landed it maybe 12 feet short of the middle, and the ball came back at my feet. Like, off the front, down the hill, 30 yards back. My buddy hit the same club and ended up 6 feet for birdie. Same pin. I still don't fully understand what happened. There's a center spine on that green that just eats balls if you're on the wrong side of it.
Rest of the course is no joke either. The greens overall are enormous and most of them tilt hard off the back. I three putted four times and I'm usually pretty steady. Wind off the lake made club selection a coin flip on the back. And the bunkers, my god, those long flat Langford bunkers look lazy from the fairway and then you get in one and realize the face is six feet of Wisconsin sand and you're hitting a 9 iron sideways.
Few gripes so I don't sound like a homer. Conditions were fine but not pristine (some thin spots on the collars, bunkers a little firm). And the clubhouse situation is what it is, don't expect anything fancy. Also the drive in is genuinely nothing, you will think you took a wrong turn past a cornfield.
Anyway. Curious if anyone has played it in late fall when the fescue dies back. I've heard the wind gets worse and the course actually plays harder, which sounds insane to me. Also, anyone compare it to the other Langford/Moreau stuff in the Midwest? I've only done this one.
