So my brother in law is turning 40 and wants to do a real "bucket list" trip this spring. He's dead set on Kohler, mainly Whistling Straits. I've never done anything close to that price point so I'm kinda sweating it lol.

From what I can tell you basically have to stay at the American Club to get decent tee times? Is that true or can you just book the course on its own? Also heard the Straits is a total wind nightmare in May and the Irish course is the sleeper pick. Anyone actually played both?

We're looking at 3 guys, probably 2 nights. Just trying to figure out if we're dropping like $1,500 each for something that lives up to the hype or if we're paying for the name. Open to the River course too if it's a better value.

Also random but do you need a caddie at Straits? I walk fine but I've read it's basically required.
