Kiawah Ocean Course first time - wind ate my whole bag

Booked the 8:10 tee time last month, paid $427 plus caddie, and my guy Dale looked at the flag on 1 and said "you got lucky, only blowing 15 today." Fifteen. Daly would've called that a hurricane.

Here's the thing nobody tells you about the Ocean Course. There are zero trees. None. It's just you, dunes, marsh, and this endless Atlantic wind that changes direction between your tee ball and your approach. Pete Dye basically built a course that plays 400 yards longer in the afternoon than it does at sunrise and just laughs about it. I shot 94 with three sleeves gone and honestly felt like I beat the place.

Nerd detail for the history folks: they flipped the nines for the 1991 Ryder Cup so the finish ran along the ocean, and you can absolutely feel why. Closing stretch is all marsh and water and the 17th is a par 3 that just hangs there in the breeze like it's daring you. Also there are gators. Real ones. Saw a six footer sunning himself next to a pond on the front and Dale didn't even slow the cart down. Apparently that's just Tuesday for them.

Weirdly the craziest part was how quiet it got on the back. No houses in view for most of it, no road noise, just wind and the ocean and your own bad decisions. Golf doesn't usually feel like that.

Anyone played it in the dead of winter when it's actually calm? Trying to figure out if the course even plays the same, or if the wind IS the course.

Played it in January. Calm, maybe 5, temp in the low 50s. Shot 81. Highest slope number I've ever posted and the least proud I've ever been of a score.

Pushback on the "wind is the course" thing though. It isn't. The wind is the excuse. Take it away and you've still got Dye's greens rolling 11 and fairways that are basically suggestions. I holed everything that day because I wasn't steering anything, just swinging at targets. Went back in April with 20 off the ocean, shot 97, and blamed the wind like a coward. Same swing.

The gators don't change though. Saw three on the front in January, all stacked on the same bank like they were carpooling. Dale said the cold makes them lazy, which is apparently different from their normal state of lazy.

Book the earliest tee time you can get. Afternoon Kiawah is a different sport.
