Booking a Kiawah trip for late September, 8 guys, 3 nights, and I keep going back and forth on whether the Ocean Course is actually the right call for the group or just the thing you're supposed to do.
Here's my math. Peak season green fee on the Ocean Course is running around $400-$450 plus caddie, and it's walking only with a forecaddie, so add gratuity on top of that. For 8 guys that's a real number. Meanwhile Osprey Point, Cougar Point, and Turtle Point are all sitting in the $150-$250 range and honestly Osprey might be the most fun round on the property for a mid-handicap group. Cougar Point has those marsh views on the back that people sleep on.
The counterargument, and I get it: you don't fly to Kiawah and skip the Ocean Course. It's a Pete Dye oceanfront monster, it hosted the Ryder Cup, and the wind alone makes it a story you tell for years. But I've also watched guys shoot 110 in a 20 mph crosswind and come off the course genuinely miserable, which poisons the rest of the trip vibe.
A few things I'm trying to nail down:
- Late September weather. Still hurricane season down there. How much risk am I actually taking on a washed out round? Anyone gotten rained out and gotten a refund or credit?
- Is the replay rate worth it, or is 36 on the Ocean in one day a death march?
- Better to stay on property at the Sanctuary or rent a villa and drive in?
We're also kicking around a Charleston day for the non-golf half of the group, so if anyone's done the split trip thing I'd love to hear how that worked logistically.
Right now my lean is Ocean Course once, Osprey twice, and let the wind decide the rest. But I'm the guy who always wants to play the famous one, so talk me out of it or back me up.
