Bought a new set of irons last spring, 4-PW. The 4-iron has maybe 5 swings on it. I'm an 8 handicap, decent ball striker, and I just never pull it. Off the tee it's hybrid or 5-wood. On par 5s I'm either going for it with a 5-iron or laying up. The 4-iron is basically a placeholder in the bag.
I keep seeing guys my level carrying 4-irons and they can't hit them. Topping it, chunking it, low hooks. Just take it out. But then I realize I'm doing the same thing. Is it just tradition? Or is there a shot I'm missing?
Thinking of swapping it for a utility iron or another hybrid. But then I wonder if I'm just not practicing with it enough. Maybe a 4-iron is still useful for punching out of trees or keeping it low into wind. But honestly, I can do that with a 5-iron.
So what's at the top of your bag? Still carrying a 4-iron? If not, what replaced it and do you actually use that club? Or is the 4-iron just a security blanket we're all afraid to let go of?
