Bought a set of iron covers two weeks ago and I've already caught more grief about it than anything else I've ever done on a course. Which is wild to me.
Full disclosure, I'm the guy who wipes his clubs down after every round. Not a gear nerd thing, I just hate the sound of a bag full of irons clacking around in the trunk. Covers kill that noise. They also keep my grooves clean, which actually matters when you're chipping out of wet rough all fall.
But the comments. "Those are for old men." "Why'd you buy nice irons if you're gonna hide them?" Sir, I'm not hiding them, I'm protecting them. There's a difference.
Here's my devil's advocate take. The same guys who clown iron covers will drop $400 on a driver, replace it every other year, and leave it rattling around uncovered in the back of a truck. Make it make sense.
The one knock I'll actually accept is pace of play. If you're fiddling with a cover on every single shot, yeah, that gets old fast. I pop mine off before the round and back on after. Takes ten seconds total.
So somebody tell me why this is the one piece of golf gear everybody agreed to hate. What am I missing here.
