Iron covers. I bought some and I'm not apologizing

Alright, I'll take the heat on this one.

Bought a set of neoprene iron covers off Amazon for $16 after my 7 iron picked up a nice gouge on the topline from bouncing around in the cart. Four rounds in and I genuinely don't get the hate.

Yeah they're ugly. Yeah my league partner asked if my clubs were going to a sleepover. But here's the thing: my irons still look new, nothing rattles, and I'm not the guy standing at the bag drop untangling a towel for five minutes. And no, they don't slow me down. I pull the cover off walking to the ball, same way you'd pull a headcover off a driver.

The argument I keep hearing is "clubs are tools, wear is character." Cool, then why does every used club listing say "9/10 condition, no chatter"? You can't care about resale value and pretend you don't care about dings. Pick one.

My actual take: iron covers are only embarrassing because of who's standing next to you. Nobody at my muni has said a word. The only guys who've chirped at me had $2k in the bag and wanted me to know it.

Anyone else running them? Or am I the only one on this forum willing to admit it.

Okay the resale thing is what kills me. Same dudes who call iron covers embarrassing will type "9/10, no chatter" into a listing and act like that's a moral stance. Pick a lane, fellas!

One real gripe with neoprene though: they trap moisture. Ask me how I know. Left mine on my old MP-32s after a dewy 7am round and pulled them out three days later to a rust bloom on the 8 and 9. If your irons are forged and you play early, you're just trading chatter for rust.

Have you tried the knit ones? The stretchy wool covers, they breathe, weigh nothing, don't hold water. Look even worse than neoprene if that's possible. My dad had a maroon set and I swore I'd never. Then I gouged a topline and here we are lol. What are you playing, cast or forged? Changes the whole math on this.

Cast. Ping i210s, 431 stainless, so rust is basically a non-starter for me. That's honestly the only reason I'm comfortable running covers at all. If I were bagging MP-32s like you were I'd think a lot harder about it.

And your rust story is exactly the trap. Neoprene is a sponge. What's worked for me: covers go on when the clubs go in the trunk, come off when they come out at the next round. Irons ride naked during play. Slightly defeats the whole point if cart chatter is your main worry, but 90% of my dings were happening in the trunk and the garage anyway, not rolling around on the course.

Knit ones I looked at but never pulled the trigger. My hang up is stretch. Had a knit hybrid cover years ago that turned into a sock by season two. Do yours still hold shape or are you just eating the cost every year?

Also your dad's maroon set is a war crime. I'd genuinely rather have the rust.
