Nobody talks about the in between wedge shot and it's quietly costing me like 3 strokes a round. Full 56 goes 95. Full 52 goes 118. Anything between 40 and 70 yards? Total guesswork. I'm basically flipping a coin and hoping the coin lands on the green.
So I tried the clock system everyone raves about. 9 o'clock with the 56 is supposed to be 60 yards for me on paper. Except my 9 o'clock is apparently more like 9:40, and when I actually check it on a launch monitor I get 71, then 58, then 66. Same swing! Three different numbers! Then I panic, decelerate, and chunk it 20 yards short of the green, which is honestly worse than just hitting the full club and hoping it stops.
Things I've tried: gripping down an inch (worked great for a week, then the feel vanished), ball back in the stance (low runners that skip off the back), and buying a 60 degree lob wedge (bladed it across the green into a bunker, then bladed it out of the bunker into the other bunker). That club is currently in timeout in my garage.
What I really want to know is whether you all are actually using a clock system with real numbers, or is it more of a feel thing where you just look at the pin and your body figures it out? And do you use one wedge for everything inside 80 yards or do you swap between the 52 and 56 depending on the shot? I keep hearing both and I can't tell which one is right. Also curious how many of you practice these at all, because I've hit maybe 200 full 7 irons this month and like 15 partial wedges, which probably explains a lot lol.
