hot take: rangefinders slowed the game down, not sped it up

Been playing Finger Lakes tracks for a while now and I swear rounds used to move faster before every single person had a laser clipped to their bag.

I'm not anti-rangefinder. I own one. But watch a foursome on an approach now. Pull the laser, shoot the flag, shoot the tree behind the flag, shoot it again because somebody jostled their elbow, then pace it off anyway to double check. By the time they finally swing they could've eyeballed the thing and been walking to the green.

The old dudes who just walked up, grabbed a club, and swung? Fast. Not always accurate, but fast. And honestly most of them were closer than you'd think on their home course.

Maybe I'm just impatient. I mostly play 9 after work and I don't want to stand in the fairway watching a guy zap a pin from 45 yards out like he's calling in an airstrike.

So is it just me or has pace of play gotten worse while everyone pats themselves on the back for being "prepared"? Because I don't think the gadget is the problem. I think the gadget gave slow players a new way to be slow.
