High bounce vs low bounce for out of lie shots

Man, I've been wrestling with this for months. It's always the same thing, right? You're trying to get a decent chip out of the rough or off a patchy fairway lie, and the ball just buries itself or flies right past you. The wedge bounce thing is such a rabbit hole, and I feel like people just throw specs at it without considering the actual lie.

I've been playing with a lot of different setups over the last season. When I'm in the deep, messy rough, I've found that a higher bounce (like a 58 or 60) gives me the most forgiveness. It just seems like it prevents the leading edge from digging in and totally killing the shot. You get a little more roll, which is what you want when the lie is unpredictable.

But then I go to the fairway, and especially if the grass is firm, that high bounce feels like it’s doing nothing but slowing the roll and just chunking it up. It’s completely unpredictable. On the other hand, when I try to play with a lower bounce wedge, it's so easy to see the difference, but you have to be dead on. If you get even slightly off the high grass, you're in trouble.

I guess the question is: when you're playing competitive golf, where you're not just messing around in the backyard, which approach do you take? Do you carry that high-bounce, forgiving setup everywhere so you minimize the risk of a disaster chip, or do you carry the lower, more responsive wedge and just pray your lie is clean? Seems like a huge trade-off between consistency and precision. What's your go-to setup and why?
