Anyone else fall into the compression trap? I spent MONTHS trying to hit down on the ball, take a divot after the ball, all that. Watched every video, tried every drill (shaft lean, cover the ball, etc.) and my irons just got worse. Fat, thin, you name it.
Then I read a comment from some old pro saying 'you don't compress the ball, the ball compresses itself if you just hit it solid.' Mind blown. So I stopped trying to compress. Stopped thinking about hitting down. Just focused on making a smooth swing and catching the ball first. And holy crap, my irons have never felt better. Flushing them. Divots are still there, but I'm not forcing it.
Have you guys gone through this? Is compression something you actively try for, or is it just a result? I'm starting to think it's the latter.
