Do you actually pick a landing spot when chipping or just look at the hole?

Been messing around with my chipping for about a month now, mostly on the practice green at my muni since the chipping area is basically dirt lol.

Every video I watch says pick a landing spot a few feet onto the green and commit to it. So I tried that today. First few were actually pretty good, landed where I wanted and rolled out nice. Then I lost the plot, went back to staring at the flag, and bladed one so bad it almost hit a guy on the next tee. Sorry dude.

So do you guys really pick a spot every time? And when you swing, are your eyes on the spot or on the ball? I keep hearing both and I have no idea which one I'm supposed to do.

Genuinely asking cause I'm like 50/50 on this right now.

The landing spot thing works but I'm not consistent enough to swear by it yet. What finally clicked for me was picking the spot, taking one look, then just looking at the ball and swinging. If I stare at the spot the whole time I get stuck and hit it fat every time. Something about my brain needing to see the thing I'm actually hitting.

Bladed one into the next tee though, been there. My worst went into the parking lot and I had to pretend I was stretching while I went to go get it.

How's your lie situation at that muni? Dirt chipping area would wreck me, half my problems are just not knowing what the ball's going to do off a tight one.
