Choked down an inch on all my irons, ball striking changed overnight

Been fighting heel strikes and early extension on my irons for like 6 months. Tried the drills. Tried the setup tweaks. Nothing stuck longer than a range session.

Last week I got sick of it and just choked down about an inch on my 7 iron. No drill, no swing thought, just gripped lower. First 10 balls were dead center. Played 9 the next day and hit 7 greens, which for me is roughly double my normal. Normally I'm the guy who hits it thin off the toe and then tells himself it was the wind.

What I noticed is that choking down let my posture settle on its own. My hands weren't reaching for the ball, my arms relaxed, and the cast kind of disappeared. Felt like the club finally fit me instead of the other way around.

So now I'm wondering if half the reason we all chase drills is that our clubs are just built too long for how we actually set up. I'm 5'10, normal-ish arms, standard length and lie, and apparently standard is a full inch too much for me. Anyone here playing clubs shorter than stock on purpose? Not talking about a fitting, I mean you just cut them down or gripped down forever and never went back.

Not trying to oversell it. One good round proves nothing and my handicap is still embarrassing. But this is the first change in months that didn't make my irons worse, which is a pretty low bar around this forum lol.
