bought a 3 wood to replace my driver and now I'm lost

So after the whole "cut my driver to 44.5" experiment I got it in my head that maybe I just shouldn't hit driver at all. Bought a used Ping G425 3 wood off a buddy for $90, figured I'd use it off the tee and keep the ball in play.

Played 18 yesterday. Hit it 4 times off the tee. Two were absolute piss missiles, one was a low screamer that ran forever, and one went about 40 yards into the fescue. The good ones were maybe 15 yards shorter than my driver. The bad one was way worse.

So now I've got driver, 3 wood, and a 5 wood in the bag and I genuinely don't know what the plan is. Am I supposed to just pick based on how confident I feel on the tee box? That seems insane.

Anyone actually committed to the 3 wood off the tee thing long term? Did it stick or did you go crawling back to driver?

Ha, the low screamer that runs forever is the one that keeps you coming back isn't it? I've been messing with this too, except my version is a 5 wood off the tee on tight holes.

What I've landed on: it's not really driver vs 3 wood, it's about what miss you can live with. My driver miss is a slice into the trees. My 5 wood miss is a weak little fade that's still in play. I'll take the shorter one every time when there's OB on the right.

But 4 swings isn't enough data. You need like 10 rounds before you know if it stuck. Give it a month.
