3 footers are somehow harder than 10 footers for me

Shot 84 on Saturday and I'm still annoyed about it because I made basically nothing outside 12 feet... no wait, that's the opposite of what happened. I made three putts from 10-15 feet. Banged them dead center. Then missed a 3 footer for par on 17 and a 2.5 footer on 9 that lipped out so hard it went 4 feet past.

So my tally for the round: 3/3 from 10+ feet, 2/6 from inside 4 feet. That's a real pattern for me too, not a one round fluke. I've been keeping loose stats in a notes app since May and my make rate inside 4 feet is genuinely worse than my make rate from 6-12. Which makes zero sense.

I think what happens is I stop reading the putt. From 10 feet I get behind it, look at the line, pick a spot, all that. From 3 feet I just walk up and hit it. And then my hands get quick because some part of my brain has already decided it's a gimme and is thinking about the next tee shot. Playing partners give me the putt half the time anyway which probably trains the laziness.

What I've started doing is treating every 3 footer like a 15 footer. Full read, full routine, even when someone says it's good. Feels ridiculous standing over a 2 footer doing a whole song and dance but I'm 4 for 5 since I started doing it.

Curious if anyone else is backwards like this. Is it a focus thing or am I actually doing something mechanically different and just can't feel it?
